Callaghan Park CPRS Award-Winning Design

The Details

The City of Watsonville’s recently refurbished downtown park, Callaghan Park, received a design and planning award in 2011 from the California Parks and Recreation Society.

Developed by the design firm Steven Sutherland Associates of Santa Cruz who worked with Liz Riehl, of Ross Recreation Equipment, the park plan was anchored by an imaginative new playground design featuring custom Nautical Themed play equipment by Landscape Structures. Surfaces, fixtures, and play components were chosen with an eye towards minimizing graffiti. To ensure a higher level of inclusiveness, the play equipment adopted Universally Accessible Play (UAP) design criteria to provide social and active play.
