Nelson Park A Community Built Playground

The Details

After over two years of planning and active fundraising, the members of a Salem, Oregon neighborhood association realized their dreams when a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on September 24, 2011 to officially open the new Nelson Park Playground.

The Neighborhood Steering Committee worked with Nick Philbin of Ross Recreation to develop designs and concepts that would include play areas for both school age and pre-school children.

“It was a real privilege to be part of this neighborhood project. Over 100 people donated cash and dozens more contributed countless hours of planning, organizing, writing grants, and physical labor to make this playground a reality. Special thanks go to the project steering committee, the City of Salem and Ross Recreation. The Steering Committee provided the spirit, the City provided most of the funds and Ross Recreation provided the technical expertise and guidance that brought everything together. If you want to build a playground, these are the people to use.” Chuck Keers, Nelson Park Neighborhood Steering Committee President
